Review: Porsche Design Monobloc Actuator Watch

A whole new system for starting and stopping a chronograph.

Porsche Design is no stranger to innovation. In the early 1970s, the brand's Chronograph 1 was the first all-black timepiece in the industry; in the 1980s, its Titan was the first chronograph made from titanium. Now, Porsche has designed a new way to start and stop a chronograph.

The brand's latest release, the Monobloc Actuator, has replaced the standard pusher buttons entirely. Instead, the entire right side of the case has been turned into a rocker switch of sorts. Like a traditional chronograph, pressing the top starts and stops the chronograph function, and pressing the bottom resets it. Porsche Design says this rocker design should be more durable than the traditional one, and while most chronographs can't be operated underwater, the Monobloc's actuator system is watertight.

The watch is powered by a Valjoux 7754, which means that in addition to the chronograph, the watch will have a GMT function. All of that is housed in a titanium case that's a fairly sizable 45.5mm in diameter and 15.6mm thick. The watch will be available in May, starting at $6,400.
